Members Of DIO, GREAT WHITE, XYZ, WARRIOR Expected At Benefit For Former KNAC Radio Personality

The support is pouring in for former KNAC FM air personality Tawn Mastrey who is struggling to survive Hepatitus C, and searching for a liver donor

Tawn's sister Cara Mastrey says, "The concert at the Martini Blue (Southern California) is sold out... there will be a lot of press there and I'm sure a line to get in."

Robbie Robfogel is putting the Martini Blue benefit show together and offers this update:

"Just wanted to keep you in the loop on who is confirmed to be at the Tribute For Tawn Show on the 28th (July) as far as "Rock Gods"... Craig Goldy (who called yesterday and really touched me by saying that everyone in the DIO camp is so proud of me for taking on this task... and Craig is excited as they come to get up there and jam for Tawn!)

Simon Wright, Terry Ilous of XYZ, who has said he is bringing with him Chris Slade (AC/DC)... (drum roll... and maybe... well, we should keep that under wraps until I get a definite from Chris and Terry).

Tony Montana (GREAT WHITE fame), Perry McCarty of WARRIOR and ATOMIC PLAYBOYS, Tommy Asakawa of Warrior, and Marco Mendoza says he more than likely will make it.

Cara Mastery adds the latest on her sis:

"The Dr's in L.A. felt Tawn would have a better chance of getting a liver here in Minneapolis. 2,000 people are on the list in L.A. and only 500 will actually get a liver.

Tawn is at our mothers home. She needs 24 hour care. She's in bed most of the time but I get her up and walking around so her body doesn't fall into atrophy.

We've had to go through a lot of red tape to get Tawn Government medical assistance before any hospital would go to the next step. That is now in place, and she is going to go through the final stages of going through physical tests, and at that point, she will be considered to go on the waiting list for a liver transplant. She will be at the top of the list because her liver is almost gone completely.

After that, it is another wait for the liver.

We are planning 3 major concerts... L.A., the Bay area and Minneapolis. We will soon announce where when and with who for the concerts.

Members Of DIO, GREAT WHITE And XYZ Help Raise Money For Former KNAC FM Rock Radio Personalit

Members of DIO, GREAT WHITE and XYZ came out to rock with local Tribute bands METAL KNIGHTS, MASTERS OF REALITY and LIGHTS OUT to help raise much needed money for radio legend Tawn Mastrey at Martini Blues in Huntington Beach this past weekend.

Just a few months ago it was announced that hard rock radio legend Tawn Mastrey had to quit her job at Sirius Satellite Radio due to health issues. Tawn is suffering from Hepatitis C and is in need of a life saving liver transplant. Having found herself in the position of not having any health insurance, major Rockers from all over are coming to her aid to help raise the needed funds so that she can have this life saving transplant.

This past Saturday night, July 28th at Martini Blues in Huntington Beach a "Tribute for Tawn" took place with local metal tribute greats Metal Knights headlining a sold out show that included Masters of Reality and Lights Out as well as an all star jam at the end of the night that included Craig Goldy and Simon Wright from Dio, Tony Montana from Great White and Terry Ilous from XYZ. The show was an overwhelming success in that 100% of the door proceeds from the sold out event went to the Tawn Mastrey Supplemental Needs Trust as well as a Silent Auction and Raffle which brought in about an additional $1,000 in cash for items such as a Bass signed by all members of Dio, including Ronnie James Dio and Rudy Sarzo.

The night was hosted by www.KNAC.COM on-air personality Diana Deville who got the crowd fired up between sets and informed them of how each and everyone could become an organ donor.

Donate Life America provided "DONATE LIFE" Flouresent green wrist bands and dog tags and donations were taken for Donate life from the sale of these items to help spread awareness and to help people learn how to become an organ donor. Please visit www.donatelife.net for more info.

The shows headliners Metal Knights is fronted by Robbie "Razor" Robfogel himself a transplant recipient.

"Having worked in radio on air in the late 80s and early 90s I knew Tawn from that period and she was always so helpful to me that when Rudy Sarzo called to tell me of Tawn's situation and Rudy knowing what I went through I knew that I could help in some way to guide Tawn and her loving sister Cara through the medical side of things since I had been through it myself", states Robfogel. "This night of rock at Martini Blues was something that I helped put together, with the help of Jackie Davis who books the venue, and let me tell you that putting on a benefit is not an easy task. But I believe wholeheartedly in organ donation and the importance of getting the word out to help save lives. I have this past year become very involved with Donate Life America and Donate Life Rocks to help spread the word and tell people how important it is that we build up the organ donor pool in the country."

Robfogel goes on: "Tawn Mastrey is a perfect example of someone who is famous to many, but didn't have insurance and we all know that when it comes to medical care money talks in this world today. So we are doing what we can do to raise whatever we can to help Tawn right now. She needs medicines in the pre-transplant phase and certain organic foods to keep her healthy enough to withstand such a long operation. Through our show this past weekend we were able to raise well over $2,000 for her and this was just a little venue. Steps are in motion to have much bigger concerts at much larger venues with big name rock n roll stars. Tawn touched and helped a lot of musicians in the hard rock scene in her time on the air, and they want to come out and play to help her now."

The show was helped made possible by Sennheiser USA who donated an incredible wireless set up for Metal Knights as well as Studio-949 owner Jeff Bresnahan who handled sound reinforcement for the show.

DIO Drummer Simon Wright - I Have "Lots Of Good Memories With AC/DC"




Get Ready To Roll! spoke with DIO drummer Simon Wright (ex-AC/DC) recently about a number of topics. Here are a few excerpts from the chat:

Get Ready To Roll!: You're currently getting a long break from Dio, whilst Ronnie goes out on the road with Heaven And Hell. How did you feel about that, when the idea was first discussed?
Wright: "I felt fine about the idea, really - the thought of those musicians being on the same stage again after all the years, well, it had to be done! You see I look at it from a fan's point of view, and there are a lot of fans who never got to see it first time round, so as far as I'm concerned it's all good!"

Get Ready To Roll!: Going back to earlier times.... AC/DC - what are your favourite memories?
Wright: "Lots of good memories with AC/DC. Brian is the funniest bloke I have ever met. Ten jokes a minute! He would have you crying with laughter. As for the shows, well there were some massive shows that would make your hair stand up. All great memories and I'm proud to have been a part of it."

Get Ready To Roll!: And even earlier.... how did you get started in the music business in the first place?
Wright: "I started work in the construction industry and enjoyed some of the work, but I could hear the drums along the motor-way calling me in the distance, ha! So off I went, left the job and joined a Manchester band called AIIZ."

Get Ready To Roll!: And how did your career progress from there to playing with AC/DC and then Dio? Is it true that you answered an ad in Sounds magazine for a drummer?
Wright: "I have been asked this question a few times, and yes, that's exactly how I got the job in AC/DC! It's always worth looking in the classified section of your local music paper under Musicians Wanted! As regards joining Dio, I got to know Ronnie back when we were doing the Monsters Of Rock festivals in the late 80s. I loved his work in RAINBOW, SABBATH, and his own band Dio. What a voice! So powerful, and a brilliant songwriter. My time with AC/DC was coming to an end, and as a drummer I needed to stretch out a bit. I still enjoyed the music, but it was a mutual thing that I move onwards - and onwards I did move, as luck would have it, to start rehearsing and recording for the Dio album Lock Up The Wolves - and we've been great friends ever since."

Get Ready To Roll!: Who are your top three musical heroes - and why?
Wright:
"1 - Ronnie James Dio. I have worked with a lot of musicians throughout my career, but none has had the same standards and self-belief as Ron. He's smart, savvy, there's no bullshit, he has a relentless work ethic, and he has a wicked sense of humour too. For me, he's the king of rock n 'roll. He's not a bad singer either. (Did he bribe me to say that? You decide!)
2 - Malcom Young. When I joined AC/DC, I was basically a kid, 18 going on 19 years old. I thought I knew it all. Haha, I didnt have a clue. How could I - I'd never been in one of the biggest rocknroll bands in the world before! Anyhow Malcom (who would definitely hate the word 'hero') always had time for me to ask what the fuck is going on with this or that. That helped me out a lot... So, thanks mate!
3 - John Bonham. Many things have been said about Mr. Bonham. Why? Because he redefined what drums were about. There were great drummers around, but.. in The Song Remains The Same, and in Dazed And Confused, when they go back into the main riff, after the middle section - there is a note he hits on the bass drum which I have never heard any other drummer get close to. I keep trying to of course! Yes, the late great Mr. John Bonham. R.I.P."

Get Ready To Roll!: What is the proudest moment in your career?
Wright: "There are three actually. When I was in AC/DC my family came to see the show at Castle Donington. All my hard slog had finally paid off and I'll never forget that day... marvelous. Also playing six nights in Chicago with UFO... and thirdly, Ronnie receiving his lifetime achievement award at Wacken festival - we stood there on the stage, with 40,000 fans singing Dio. A very proud moment for us all!"
